Chapter 8 · Day 2 · ~10 min

Use AI Responsibly

AI is a powerful helper. But it can be wrong, it can leak what you share, and it can copy things it shouldn't. The good news: a few simple habits keep you, your visitors and your friends safe. You are the one in charge.

In this chapter you will

AI can be wrong — so you check

AI writes very confidently. It sounds sure even when it is guessing. When an AI makes something up, we call it a hallucination (an invented answer that sounds real). It happens in three typical ways:

Invented facts

Dates, prices, numbers, quotes — even "sources" that don't exist.

Features that don't work

A contact form that looks finished but sends nothing. A button that does nothing on a phone.

Old information

AI learned from data up to a certain date. Opening hours, prices, laws and free plans change.

Your golden rule: test everything, check every fact.Click every button. Open the page on your phone. Read every sentence out loud. Check facts on an official website before you publish. If you can't check it, delete it.

Protect your privacy (and your friends')

Everything you type into an AI tool leaves your computer. It goes to a company's servers. On many free plans, your prompts may be used to train or improve the AI, and sometimes people at the company can read them. Many tools let you switch this off in the settings — check them.

Never paste these into a prompt

  • Passwords
  • API keys
  • Phone numbers
  • Home addresses
  • ID or bank numbers
  • Health information
  • Other people's data

Use placeholders (fake stand-in content) while you build: Jane Doe, +00 000 000 000, name@example.com. At the very end, replace them yourself — and only with real details you are allowed to publish.

What DigiBot does with your data

Copyright is the right of creators to decide how their work is used. Almost every photo, text, logo and song online is protected — even without a © sign.

❌ Avoid

  • Copying photos from an image search
  • Copying another website's design or text
  • Using famous logos, characters or brand names

✅ Do this instead

  • Use your own photos (with permission from people in them)
  • Use free image libraries — and read the licence (the rules for using the image). Some ask you to credit the creator.
  • Write your own words, or rewrite AI drafts in your voice

AI output can look like existing workAI learned from millions of texts and images. Sometimes it produces something very close to a real logo, character or text. If it looks familiar, don't use it.

Be honest, do no harm

No fake reviews

AI can write "happy customer" reviews in seconds. Don't. Fake reviews mislead people, and they are banned in the EU and many other countries.

No imitation pages

Never copy a real bank's or brand's login page. That is how phishing works: fake pages that steal passwords.

Label AI content

If people could think an AI image is a real photo, or an AI text is a real person speaking, say so: "Image created with AI."

Europe takes this seriously too. The EU AI Act (the EU's law about artificial intelligence) includes transparency rules: for example, people should know when they talk to a chatbot, and some AI-generated content, like realistic fake videos, must be labelled.

Build for everyone

About 1 in 6 people in the world lives with a significant disability (World Health Organization). Accessibility means your site works for them too — and it makes the site better for everyone. It is part of being responsible, not an extra.

♿ Accessible

  • Alt text on images (a short description for screen readers)
  • Strong contrast between text and background
  • Everything works with the keyboard (Tab key)
  • Colour is never the only signal

🤝 Inclusive

  • Clear, simple language
  • Images that show different kinds of people
  • Words that include everyone ("everyone", not "guys")
  • No assumptions about gender, age or background
Prompt · accessibility check
Check my page for accessibility problems: missing alt text, low colour contrast, headings in the wrong order, and buttons that don't work with the keyboard. List the problems in simple words, then fix them.

Learn, don't just copy

If you only copy and paste, you get a website. If you ask why, you also get a skill. Try these habits:

  1. Ask "why?"Why did the AI choose this colour, this layout, this code? Good answers teach you something.
  2. Change one thing yourselfEdit a colour or a sentence directly in the code. Then refresh and see what happened.
  3. Explain it backCan you explain your page to a friend in one minute? Then you really understand it.
Prompt · learn from your code
Explain the header of my page like I'm new to coding. What does each part do, and which 3 things could I safely change myself?

AI has a footprint

Every AI answer is calculated on powerful computers in data centres (huge buildings full of servers). They use a lot of electricity, and many use water for cooling. One prompt is small — but millions of people prompting every day add up.

You don't need to feel guilty. Just be thoughtful:

Game: OK, not OK, or it depends?

Six short situations. For each one, decide: is it OK, not OK, or does it depend? Discuss with the person next to you before you click.

Keep building at home

The workshop ends — your projects don't have to. Here are three free ways to keep going. Pick the one that fits you.

Easiest Works on any computer

Use a free AI chat app in your browser: Le Chat (by Mistral), ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Microsoft Copilot or DeepSeek. Most need a free account. Free plans have daily message limits, and those limits change often.

  1. Ask for one single filePaste a prompt like the one below and describe your site.
  2. Copy the codeUse the copy button on the code block in the chat.
  3. Save it as index.htmlOpen a plain text editor: Notepad on Windows, or TextEdit on Mac (first choose Format → Make Plain Text). Paste the code and save the file as index.html, with UTF-8 encoding. In Notepad, set “Save as type” to “All files”, so it doesn't become index.html.txt.
  4. Open it in your browserDouble-click the file. That's your website!
  5. IterateAsk for one change at a time, and always add: "Send me the complete updated file." Save over the old file, then press F5 to refresh.
Starter prompt for any chat app
You are my web design helper. I can't code. Create ONE complete file called index.html for: [describe your site — who it is for, what it should say, the style and colours]. Rules: - Put all CSS in a <style> tag and all JavaScript in a <script> tag in the same file. - No external libraries, fonts or images. Use emoji or CSS shapes instead of photos. - It must work well on phones. - Use placeholder text instead of real personal data. Give me the full code in one code block. Then explain in 3 short bullet points what you made.

Keep your old versionsSave each good step as a new file: index-v1.html, index-v2.html… If something breaks, you can go back.

Best with DigiBot No credit card

Create your own free Mistral account and an API key (a secret code that lets DigiBot use the AI on your account). Then paste it into DigiBot Studio. You can keep using everything you learned here — no class code needed.

  • Your own free credit: $10 of API credit every month, reset on the 1st. Everyone who signs up gets their own.
  • Your own limits: nobody else can use up your credit, and you never wait in the class queue.
  • Private path: your browser talks to Mistral directly. Your key never touches our server.

Free plans change often — the setup guide shows what to check.

Most private Needs a strong computer

Local AI runs on your own computer instead of a company's servers. Free apps like Ollama and LM Studio let you download an open-weight model and chat with it — even offline.

👍 Good

  • Nothing leaves your computer
  • No accounts, no daily limits
  • Works without internet after the download

👎 Not so good

  • Needs lots of memory (RAM) and ideally a good graphics card
  • Models are big downloads (several gigabytes)
  • Smaller models write weaker code

Only download apps from their official websites: ollama.com and lmstudio.ai.

🎉 You made it

You can build a real website with AI.

You didn't just press a button. You learned the whole loop — and you know when to trust AI and when to check it.

  1. Plan
  2. Prompt
  3. Review
  4. Fix
  5. Iterate
  6. Publish
